WELCOME TO THE SACRED ART OF DAUGHTERING!

It’s so complex. It’s hard. It's beautiful. It’s sad. It’s messy. We lose our patience. We try so damn hard to find grace. We reach down deep. There is frustration that others assume we will just do it. There is the realization that I can count on myself to be someone who will just do it. There is yelling (at least in my case). There is crying. There are the most real conversations. There is the unavoidable reality of what is. And the reality of who is there to face this reality. And maybe…just maybe… we are cracking that generation’s false belief in independence. It is a test of trying (in a very messy way) to live the values of community and family that we tell ourselves we want.

And yet, it is a narrative that gets flattened to an unsophisticated sacrifice. A sacrifice that society welcomes to shield themselves from the inconvenience of meeting reality in its nakedness. But in this flattening, we miss out on the wisdom, strength and perspective that comes. The Sacred Art of Daughtering is a collection of stories from daughters about the complexity and reality of caring for parents and elders.
