And We Got to Work

"well, I'm not sure..." Gini wrote in her characteristically brief email.

Gini has become a mentor. And I am so grateful for her mentoring, because I am not always sure I live up to her commitment to me. I stumble along, back track a fair amount, and misjudge the moment at terrible times. But this conversation was not about the big view on life.

This moment was about showing up for the unglamorous and decidedly pedestrian.

Gini is a guide and mentor to so many, but has no biological children of her own. And in this moment, she needed a daughter. To unpack boxes. To move furniture. To hang paintings.

"It is about daughtering," I said when I showed up with lunch. "And I know how to daughter. And you could use a daughter right now."

And we got to work.
